In the Vieux Carre section of New Orleans stands the old cathedral. It is in the charge of the Oblate Fathers, whose dedication is to work among the poor. So here they have created a social center and set up a playground. Within the cathedral are the archives containing records of births, marriages and deaths for more than two centuries. The superintendent of the community center and the keeper of these old records is John Ray. Here he guards, copies and translates these archives, be they written in Spanish, French, Latin or Italian. Here, also, he supervises the work of the social center and sees that all goes well on the playground. But one might find him sitting somewhere in this play area, surrounded by the shouts of play, hemmed in by the narrow streets and close-built houses of the Vieux Carre, carving.

From the block of wood in his hand he will be fashioning a bird, and he will likely tell you that what he is doing transports him from the congested confines of the district to the wide open spaces. This is John Ray’s hobby. He is a native of Ohio, and has always cherished an inquiring love of Nature. He says that his earliest memories are entwined with roaming the countryside with a pal and observing the wild world about him. And with his love of Nature went an interest in wood carving. As a youngster he carved horses and traded them for boyish treasures. Grown up, he studied with the Oblate Fathers, but ill health stopped his studies and he turned to social work and travel, setting aside his carving tools. Finally came the opportunity to serve humanity at the old cathedral. With this chance came also the opportunity to carry out the stifled desire to carve birds in his spare moments.

With a rare and delicate touch he began transforming pieces of wood into captivating and authentic creatures. He completed a series of bird carvings and placed them in a special case with a habitat background. Urged by delighted friends to go on, he has now completed a collection of three hundred and thirteen birds representative of every group of North American bird life.

From Nature itself<img src="http://www.articlesfactory.com/pic/x.gif" alt="Science Articles" border="0", from skins and from pictures he has taken his inspiration. Each bird is first carefully studied and outlined roughly on wood. Then the rude outline is cut out with a coping saw. From then on it is a matter of a skillful knife and equally skillful painting. His latest group of birds comprises seventeen southern marsh birds; larger than his other subjects and so delicately and gracefully fashioned that they stand erect yet sway with the least vibration. Although John Ray's collection has been appraised at several thousand dollars he says that he is not interested in selling it. Art lacks interest for him the moment it loses spontaneity and must be produced to please another.

Food Articles | May 24, 2010

Health values in Spanish Ham and how they benefit your body.

Spanish ham or Iberian ham as it is known has many benefits in comparison to your everyday meats. One of the main benefits is the nutritional value and health benefits it contains and is classed as one of the healthiest factors of a Mediterranean and Spanish diet. The flavour is far greater than your average ham with the strict origin laws that state a specific production, curing and drying process must take place. This guarantees the flavour, colour and aroma as well as the health benefits it will contain. In Spain however, although it is considered to those who know, not very many Spanish people are well educated on just how nutritional and healthy the Spanish Ham is, they just enjoy it for the flavour and care that goes into preparing it for sale.

So to break it down, 100 grams of Iberian ham contains:

200 calories which is 1/10 of your daily intake for a woman and 1/12.5 for a man. 70 milligrams of cholesterol which is just less than a quarter of your recommended daily intake. It provides for than 24% of your recommended daily intake of niacin which is known as vitamin B3. 33% of your protein intake which is great for people who go to the gym as usually fresh meat contains about 22% of your recommended daily intake so that is 50% more. Rich in Calcium which helps your bones stay strong. 2.20mg of Zinc which is more that 1/10 of your recommended daily amount. Zinc has been proven to help concentration levels in adults and is very good for your immune system. 2.3mg of Iron which is 1/8 of your daily allowance. Rich in magnesium. 100mg of Carbohydrates. There is no recommended health guideline for carbohydrates as they pose no major health risk. On average a person will consume 200-300mg of carbohydrates a day unless they are trying to lose weight then they may cut it down to 100-150mg. On average about 14 grams of fat which is under ¼ of your recommended daily intake. The fat found in Iberian ham contains Oleic acid which is the same found in olive oil. This helps produce good cholesterol known as HDL while reducing bad cholesterol. Rich in B vitamins which:
Keep your heart working Break down the protein in the food we eat Helps our nervous system send messages to and from the brain Breaks food we eat down and turns it into fuel for our bodies Helps our immune system Makes new cells

1470mg of Sodium which is more than half of our recommended daily amount. Sodium helps our bodily fluid flow properly and regulates that there is always the correct amount of fluid in our bodies, it controls our sweat<img src="http://www.articlesfactory.com/pic/x.gif" alt="Computer Technology Articles" border="0", tells us when we are thirsty etc. Too much or too little sodium can be a health risk so knowing how much to consume is extremely beneficial.
There are many Spanish Ham importers in the UK who pride themselves on importing the best meat from Spain. This means if you are on a health kick you can enjoy the nutritional values of Spanish meat without having to jump on a plane and cross over to another country.

The Purloined Boy, Mortimus Clay, ISBN 9780982159804

This is the tale of Trevor, a young boy who becomes one of those children who end up on milk cartons under the word Missing.

Trevor is living in a dark and dreary town called Superbia, along with many other children. Think of an orphanage from Victorian England. They are not allowed to say words like “parents” or “home.” If they do, the boogeymen who run Superbia (and who kidnapped the children from their beds), will send them away for behavior modification, or send them to the Pantry, to be fattened up and eaten by the boogeymen. Becoming a meal for the boogeymen is the eventual fate of all the children.

After a very vivid dream about his parents, Trevor asks about going home, and is sent away for behavior modification. Around this time, he meets Maggie, a fellow orphan who also has memories of life before Superbia. She tells Trevor that she is part of a secret society whose aim is to help all the children who want to return home to actually do it. He also meets Epictetus, a one-eyed slave who is a leader in the “underground,” and Zephyr, a very unique talking mouse. Trevor also learns about Trothward, a very nice place outside Superbia. He also learns about the long-term war going on between the Guild, who runs Trothward, and Lucian, the leader of the boogeymen. This leads Trevor to one adventure, and narrow escape, after another, while he is traversing many dank and dreary passageways beneath Superbia.

This is a young adult book that was made to be read aloud to older children, say between 10-13 years old. It may be a little too much for younger children. There are a number of dark and spooky bits in this story, and, being first in a series, there is not a “happily ever after” ending. The author does an excellent job with this tale from beginning to end, and it is very much worth the time.

Many people are learning Spanish as a second language today. Spanish can be helpful both in travels around the world and in many businesses. The biggest advantage to learning a foreign language now is that there are many excellent resources to help you learn right from the comfort of home. This article will provide you with important factors to consider when looking for a course.

If you want the fastest and easiest method, visit this site to start learning spanish online.

Learning Spanish online is one of the easiest methods to do from home. The first factor to look for in online Spanish courses is audio resources. To learn proper pronunciation of any language, you must hear is spoken correctly over and over again. Audio tutorials also get you accustomed to hearing the language so you learn to translate what you hear quickly and accurately. Some audio resources can also be taken in your car so you can learn as you are running errands or picking up kids from school.

Another part of learning to speak Spanish is grammar. Most languages have different grammar structure than English. It is important to understand how to create proper sentences both when speaking the language and writing it. Look for online Spanish classes that provide sufficient grammar exercises so you can learn correct grammar through comprehensive instruction and plenty of practice.

Another important component to Spanish lessons online is vocabulary. Some tutorials provide an ample glossary so you may not need to invest in a Spanish dictionary right away. There are also many good online Spanish dictionaries that can be used to complement your studies. However, finding a Spanish language learning program should include asking about the amount of vocabulary that is taught in the program.

It is also important to find an online Spanish course that takes a variety of learning styles into consideration. This is especially important when learning Spanish for kids. Some children are auditory learners while others are visual. The best Spanish learning software will provide a combination of visual and auditory learning techniques to appeal to more students in a single session.

If you are in the market for learning Spanish software, consider Tell Me More. This company offers a range of software packages to appeal to all budgets and ability levels. The products are backed by years of research to prove their effectiveness and are used by governments and businesses around the globe. The company also provides tutorials in other languages.

Presentation Skills Lessons From Teaching College History

Presentation Skills Lessons From Teaching College History

One of my first jobs after graduate school was as an instructor at a community college. My course load included teaching American History 102 (1865-present) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00-8:50 A.M. It was a required course for most of the 35 students and history was not their major. So my challenge was how to communicate to the students while keeping them awake and interested.

That experience taught me many lessons about effective presentation skills – lessons I still use today in my own presentations and when I teach presentation skills. And these same lessons can help you become a more effective presenter:

Slides and Visual Aids are Optional

Those were low-tech days – just me and the chalkboard, and occasionally a few pull-down maps hooked onto the chalkboard. I learned that I was the presentation and that any visual aids were only there to help, but not required. And no visual aid could make up for a lack of preparation on my part.

Where is it written that presentations must include slides? If the slides have compelling, memorable visuals, then they can help the audience understand and remember the information. Unfortunately, most slides are endless lists of bullet points in small font; those kinds of slides actually hinder the audience’s understanding and even distract their attention away from you.

Stories Capture Attention

I learned that it is possible to capture the attention of a potentially bored or distracted audience – yes, even 35 teenagers and young adults in a required class at 8 AM on a Friday morning. In order to make class interesting, I told stories that made the “boring names and dates” come alive and helped them see the historical figures as real people instead of presenting a tedious list of facts to be memorized.

Stories work even in a business setting. Try sharing a quick story of how a customer uses your product or how your new software helped a specific department get work done faster.

Energy and Enthusiasm are Contagious

I had to be more energetic than the students and I didn’t drink coffee! It helped that I loved my subject and loved teaching – and most students responded positively. Even if they didn’t come to love the subject like I did, they could at least appreciate and respect my enthusiasm for it.

Are you excited about your topic? Are you energetic? While it’s not always possible to love the topic you are presenting, your energy and enthusiasm will help engage your audience.

Get the Audience Involved

In order to keep the students engaged and interested, I asked questions, walked up and down the aisles, had them work together in pairs and small groups and encouraged their questions.

Try using some of these techniques with your audience. You can also ask them for examples, give them an exercise to work on individually or ask for a volunteer to come forward and help you with a demonstration.

Respect the Audience

I realized on the first day that I had to earn the respect of the students. They didn’t care about my credentials. It wasn’t about me; it was about them and how I could help meet their learning needs. I learned not to talk down to my audience or to insult them. I learned not to lie if I didn’t know the answer – but to admit it and find the answer for them before the next class. I met them at their level, showed interest in their lives and didn’t pretend to know a lot about their world or their music.

You can show your respect for your audience by taking the time to prepare and by not speaking for longer than expected. You can also make it clear why your message is relevant to them.

These Lessons are Transferable

The greatest compliment I received from students was that after taking my class, they realized history was interesting, relevant and even fun. And some who thought they were “stupid” at history realized they were not stupid and that they could understand and “do” history.

I transferred those early lessons to my current career, where I work with corporate professionals, entrepreneurs and business owners and enable them to realize that they’re not “stupid” at presentation skills – and with practice, they can learn to be more effective presenters.

The next time you have to present, whatever your topic or environment, try these lessons to keep your audience engaged and involved.

When I decided to learn Spanish I never imagined that I had to buy over 30 products before I got it right. Yes, that is right I bought more than 30 products, to be exact 33.

I learned bits here and bits there but at some point I was becoming very frustrated and doubtful of my ability to learn Spanish. The fact that I bought lots of ‘good for nothing’ products affected my confidence and almost made me give up.

My last attempt was Rocket Spanish which I stumbled across after reading a review that someone wrote. Unfortunately I can’t remember his name to mention here and say thank you.

That is why I decided to write this review and help you who like me wants to learn Spanish but don’t have the time or money to pay for expensive courses. Now after two months of dedication and the right tools I can speak Spanish very well now and have eradicated my blockages caused by my uniformed decisions.

Below I describe in detail the Rocket Spanish Course. The same course which took me from a frustrated Spanish student to a proficient Spanish speaker.

Here is what you get:

Interactive Audio Course Containing 31 Lessons
Rocket Spanish has the best conversational learning element in their 31 interactive audio lessons. There are 31 tracks of interactive daily conversations all you must know to be able to communicate in the real Spanish speaking world. How to ask for information such as how much things, cost where you can find things, asking for directions, how to introduce yourself, greetings and everything you will need to know to be able to get around in a Spanish environment.

The program is designed to help you speak Spanish straight away. It will teach you pronunciation and vocabulary inside the right context so you can keep what you have learned in your memory more easily. When you just memorize words outside a context you will easily forget them. The amazing part is that after 10 minutes you can start saying whole sentences.

Listening to conversations and being able to interact and train pronunciation is the best way to learn Spanish. With Rocket Spanish you will feel like you are having conversations with native speakers in your place. They manage to bring to the public the replica of a private lesson.

All of the 31 audio lessons come with transcripts and English translations that you can print and read. Plus the audio lessons are in MP3 format so you can carry them with you for extra classes when you are out and about.

MegaVerbs Learning Game
There are many more verb conjugations in Spanish than there are in English and because of this you will sometimes feel that verb tenses are a bit challenging.

Using this game, Rocket Spanish managed the impossible of making verb tense learning fun and easy.

MegaVocabulary Learning Game
Rocket Spanish offers a brilliant piece of software designed to give you some fun while you are learning vocabulary. Learning vocabulary is always the boring part when you are learning any language. However, Rocket Spanish manages to bring to you this extra tool that will rocket your vocabulary acquisition.

Maga Vocab software has over 1000 key words in 20 different topics where you can play the game and at the same time test your vocabulary knowledge. Also the software has the added feature which lets you add new words and pictures which is great especially if you learn something new outside of the course.

MegaAudio Learning Game
When leaning a language the real proof that we can communicate is when we understand what native people say to us. That is the biggest challenge when learning a language.

Rocket Spanish comes with a software game where you can train your listening comprehension so you make sure when you are out there in the Spanish speaking world you will understand just fine.

Exercises, Vocabulary and Grammar Books

Hindi is an exotic language of the exotic land, India. Anybody will start loving this country at first sight. Learning it is difficult but not impossible. The main point is that you can not aim to learn it instantly. You should set achievable targets so that you do not get disappointed and quit soon. As they say “winners never quit and quitters never win”. When you first start learning Hindi, you should start with alphabets. Having a target of say, five alphabets daily and mastering them is reasonably an achievable target in the initial stages. After you learn the alphabets and start reading slowly, learning five words a day is a good target.

Learning Hindi is a long-drawn process and you can not push it beyond a certain limit. Only if you go through the entire process of learning, you can proclaim that you have learned Hindi. But if you advance slowly and steadily, every small success will take you towards your aim of learning Hindi.

You can learn Hindi through an online course, thanks to the advent of the Internet. This helps you to learn it at your own convenient pace. Online learning also helps you to repeat the class till you are completely satisfied with your learning. You have audio instructions in such online courses so that learning pronunciation of words becomes easy. You also have interactive sessions online using which you can get your doubts clarified. There are some software that offer you vocabulary-building games and creative learning techniques in Hindi. All these courses are user-friendly and they are not expensive also. But if you engage a tutor for learning Hindi, that may cost you a fortune. The high point in such online courses is that you can learn the language in the midst of your other work and anywhere you like.

You can try writing your diary in Hindi. In the initial stages, you can transliterate the language in English or in your own language and once you are confident of writing in Hindi, you can start writing in Hindi itself. The point that is being stressed here is that you should practice using Hindi as often as possible so that you can learn it faster. Whenever you talk to yourself, you can try speaking in Hindi so that retaining whatever you learned becomes easy. You should also make it a point to converse in Hindi with your friends and those who know it. By practicing what you learn daily, you can write and speak Hindi soon.

Instead of having a lengthy learning session, you can split the session into two shorter sessions so that you will not feel the length of it or get fatigued. In the first short session, you can learn new words or new sentence structures and in the second one, you can revise them so that you retain whatever you learned in the first session or in the previous sessions. Repetition helps you in retention of whatever you learned. It is often said that plowing deep is better than plowing wide. So you should learn each word or sentence structure thoroughly and then move on to the next.

You should keep your motivation levels in tact so that learning Hindi becomes fun. For doing so, you can devise your own ways to reward yourself suitably whenever you are appreciated for your prowess in Hindi. You should ensure that you get such appreciative pats on your back as often as possible.

Going to college? Or, are you hoping to? The cost of universities and colleges has become outrageous. It takes a lot of money to get a solid education these days. But, one way of offsetting the cost of schooling is through the use of scholarships. The question is how you get them. While many people strive to get good grades or do well in their area of expertise, it is just plan simple that they will not get the scholarships they need unless they look hard for them. Here are some hints to get you started.

· Beginning early is so important. In fact, it will take you quite a while to learn what is out there and how to apply for it. It will take research, dedication and perseverance to get it accomplished.

· Use the internet as a source of help. You can find all sorts of opportunities out there that are at least referenced online. Many of the schools you attend will provide you with some help in finding them, but most of the research will be up to you.

· Think about the company that you work for. Many of the companies that young adults work for offer them the opportunity to get a good education on the company’s expense. Many companies will offer scholarships of one sort or another to help you get the degree you need while still maintaining the relationship with them. This helps down the road for them as well. They get a qualified, trained individual who is dedicated to their company.

Scholarships are offered by hundreds of companies, cities, schools, and many other establishments. Get your foot in the door by requesting information from many companies. Look to the government (city, state, county, and federal) for scholarships as well. There are many thousands of them out there, but to show that you deserve them, you have to find them!
